Data from: An Analysis of Nearly One Billion Dollars of Aquaculture Grants made by the United States Federal Government from 1990 to 2015

posted on 2024-02-08, 20:41 authored by David LoveThe United States aquaculture industry relies on federal investments to stimulate aquaculture research and development (R&D). This dataset contains nearly 3,000 U.S. federal research grants awarded from 1990 to 2015. The total grant spending during that period was nearly $1 billion dollars from nine federal agencies. Each grant contains typical information found on a grant cover page: title, abstract, PI, institution, funding amount, award period, etc. Grant awardee addresses are provided. We have also annotated each grant with keywords relevant to the field of aquaculture.

Using the database researchers can better understand how funds have been used as well as identify research gaps, inform federal policy, grant making, and budget allocation for aquaculture.Use limitations
The dataset provides federal grant funding but not the total federal funding for aquaculture including support activities and regulation of the industry. Missing data was interpolated for most awards, but missing data for USDA ARS was not interpolated. Some grants did not provide species, discipline, or other details for analysis. A limited number of umbrella grants were issued to one institution with multiple investigators for multiple topics, and these sub-awards could not be disaggregated. The database does not include grant awards or other funding for hatchery projects from the National Fish and Wildlife Service (i.e. National Fish Hatchery System), R&D at seven Fish Technology Centers, or NOAA's support for hatcheries and stock enhancement (i.e. the Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Fund). The dataset does not include aquaculture grants from the Advanced Technology Program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which existed in the 1990s and early 2000s.Temporal Extent Start Date
