The Weevils of North America (WoNA) (http://symbiota4.acis.ufl.edu/scan/portal/checklists/checklist.php?cl=1) is an emerging resource for occurrence information, habitus photographs, legacy descriptions, and interactive identification keys for the almost 400 genera and 3300 species of weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) in North America, led by the Arizona State University Frank F. Hasbrouck Insect Collection (ASUHIC) group (NMF) and the Systematic Entomology Laboratory (USDA-SEL) (MLC). The majority of specimens stem from the Charles W. O'Brien (CWOB) weevil collection, and Dr. O'Brien's vast and generous contributions to this effort are hereby kindly acknowledged. We also acknowledge support from the United States Department of Agriculture.

Intended use

Contributes to a nationwide effort to capture specimen information from natural history collections to inform large-scale analyses of species occurrences and interactions, that is, by linking weevils with their host plant records (simultaneously captured with locality data) and reveal coevolutionary interactions. Important features and products that may be generated include download entire datasets; map georeferenced records; design custom species lists for any locality at multiple scales; develop educational games with data; create taxonomic keys. A clear understanding of the identity and distribution of native species will assist in determining native from non-native weevil species. Anticipated users are scientists and laypersons worldwide who need to document the distribution of North American weevils and assist in making identifications.
