Transcriptomes were assembled de novo from pools of adult aphids that were feeding on sorghum and switchgrass. Reads from all replicates were pooled, normalized in silico to 25X coverage, and assembled using Trinity. Only the most abundant isoform for each unigene was retained for annotation and unigenes with transcripts per million mapped reads (TPM) less than 0.5 were removed from the dataset. The remaining unigenes were annotated using Trinotate with BLASTP comparisons against the Swiss-Prot/UniProt database. In addition, Pfam-A assignments were computed using hmmer, signal peptide predictions were performed using SignalP, and transmembrane domain predictions were performed using tmHMM. Gene ontology (GO assignments) were retrieved from Trinotate using the highest scoring BLASTp matches as queries.

The relative influences of total precipitation and air temperature on the annual low streamflow extremes are quantified from 42 Pacific Northwest stream gauges from 1948 to 2013 using mean annual streamflow as a proxy for precipitation amount effects and streamflow center of timing as a proxy for temperature effects on low flow metrics.

To assess the magnitude of greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes, nutrient runoff and leaching from dairy barnyards and to characterize factors controlling these fluxes, nine barnyards were built at the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center Farm in Prairie du Sac, WI (latitude 43.33N, longitude 89.71W). The barnyards were designed to simulate outdoor cattle-holding areas on commercial dairy farms in Wisconsin. Each barnyard was approximately 7m x 7m; areas of barnyards 1-9 were 51.91, 47.29, 50.97, 46.32, 45.64, 46.30, 48.93, 48.78, 46.73 square meters, respectively. Factors investigated included three different surface materials (bark, sand, soil) and timing of cattle corralling. Each barnyard included a gravity drainage system that allowed leachate to be pumped out and analyzed. Each soil-covered barnyard also included a system to intercept runoff at the perimeter and drain to a pumping port, similar to the leachate systems.
Field-based, partial life table data for immature stages of Bemisia tabaci on cotton in Maricopa, Arizona, USA where data provide the marginal, stage-specific rates of mortality for eggs, and 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instar nymphs, and life table data that were used to provide parameters for population matrix models. The model can be used to estimate overall population growth rate and can also be analyzed to determine which life stages contribute the most to changes in growth rates.
