The Ag Data Commons is migrating

The Ag Data Commons is migrating to a new institutional portal on Figshare. The current system is available for search and download only. The new platform is open for submission with assistance from Ag Data Commons curators. Please contact NAL-ADC-Curator@usda.gov, if you need to publish or update your datasets.

USDA will be conducting a virtual listening session to solicit input on policies for public access to federally funded agricultural research data. The listening sessions should be of particular interest to stakeholders who have an interest in Ag Data Commons and other projects. These stakeholders include federally funded researchers, industry scientists, producers, universities, libraries, publishers, users of federally funded research results, and civil society groups. For more information on public access to scholarly publications and digital scientific data policy development and implementation plans, visit http://www.ree.usda.gov.

Meeting details are below; please follow the link to the press release for more detailed information on how to participate.

From the National Agricultural Library Weekly Report (October 20, 2015): "NAL's Ag Data Commons launches improved prototype site. NAL’s Knowledge Services Division launched the latest beta version of the Ag Data Commons at https://data.nal.usda.gov. Ag Data Commons is designed to help the USDA research community comply with directives that federally funded research products shall be freely available to the public. It aims to make research data highly discoverable and usable and complements the Library’s other agricultural information management products and services. Among the new features are: a redesigned home page with news, the ability for USDA-funded researchers to register and submit data, links to the published literature, filters for funding sources, and pages highlighting data from programs such as the Long-Term Agroecosystem Research initiative, the LCA Commons, and the Veterinary Pest Genomics Center."

Congrats to the ADC Team!

We’ve added 104 new datasets to our registry! These records are from the Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) network. The LTAR network consists of 18 research sites across the U.S. that have been collecting large quantities of data for an average of 50 years each. See the LTAR program page for more information, and to browse all the new datasets.

We are pleased to announce a new program page for the Veterinary Pest Genomics Center on Ag Data Commons. The Veterinary Pest Genomics Center (VPGC) is an initiative within the US Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (ARS). The vision for this initiative is to leverage big data solutions to evaluate risk from, and develop mitigations for invasive veterinary pests.

Visit the program page for more information on the Center, and to browse all related datasets. Even more resources are coming soon, so stay tuned!

Do you want your research to have a greater impact by making it accessible to more people? Do you want to become a part of the growing open data movement, and support agricultural research around the world?

We are in the process of setting up a remote login system so that researchers like you can submit data to our repository. The process will be simple: login, fill out the data submission form, upload or link to your data, and submit. Our curators will then review your data submission and be in touch with you regarding publication on Ag Data Commons. We appreciate your interest in our repository, and will update this news feed when our data submission system goes live. Stay tuned!
