Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) Network - Meteorological Station - Central Mississippi River Basin (CMRB)

The USDA-ARS Cropping Systems and Water Quality Research Unit has maintained weather stations since 1969. Early stations were max/min thermometers or recording hygrothermographs. These legacy data were part of the data store contributed to the Central Mississippi River Basin node of the Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) network upon establishment in 2012. CMRB has established a new weather station that includes dual sensors for most measurements – one set matching the legacy instruments and another matching LTAR meteorology standards. Simultaneous measurements from both will enable an analysis of whether the legacy and current standards impose non-homogeneities on the data record. The location of the station is 39.22848 latitude, -92.11936 longitude, and 263.9 m ASL. Measurements include air temperature and humidity, shortwave (solar) irradiance, longwave (thermal) radiation, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, and rainfall. Profiles of soil moisture and temperature are planned. Data are measured at 3-second intervals, and samples, averages, maxima, and minima are recorded on 5-minute intervals. On an hourly basis, data are telemetered to a server in a building on the research site. Local data management and processing creates a permanent record, and a separate process formats a selected subset of the data for transmission to the LTAR Meteorology Repository at the National Agricultural Library, where it is available to the public in near-real time, nominally within 15 minutes past the hour for the prior hour’s data.
